I want to learn yoga for a long time and I feel that now it's the right time. And I read yoga is good for lower back pain which would be amazing for me, I'm 17 and if generally at the end of the day I can't handle the pain, I just go to bed, it's worst when I exercise or stand up for long times straight or walk too much. I eat healthy but I almost only exercise two times a week (in class). I'm going to the doctor in May to see what's wrong but if yoga can help me I'd love to see that happen!
The thing is I can't afford take a class and my question is can I learn yoga by myself? And if I can what should I know and I'd appreciate any tips (I do headstands easily and I'm a bit flexible)

I would advise you see a doctor. That sort of pain isn't normal.

I agree with NurseKimberly... I had that pain when I was in my teens and I found out it was Scoliosis (sounds scarier than it really is). Depending on what your doctor says, yoga might still be helpful. It's definitely helped me more than that horrid backbrace I wore.
Definitely go get yourself checked out!

I'm going to a doctor Wednesday. I hope it's nothing really serious. And I'm going to try implement yoga in my routine! Thank you for your answers =D
3Abc of yoga is a good site. Also FitTV has a Yoga show which is good but kind of fast paced at first, it is weird doing some of the poses at first but you will feel good afterwards. Then there is WiiFit, that is good. It is easy to catch onto yoga after awhile because of the names and how the posing build on each other.
Good luck at the doc.

Ccath I hope your doctor was helpful. I had back problems since I was 17 and that was a long time ago. Yoga has been great for me and I agree with you that classes are expensive. I will suggest you do a search for yoga groups in your area. I live in SoFla and you can find here yoga classes in parks or at the beach for just a $5 donation. MHO is that you will need the guidance of an instructor at the beginning to make sure you are doing it right.
Hope it helps.
PS: remember to tell the instructor about your back, some of them will ask if anyone has a health problem.
5I definitely agree that you should check with your doctor to see what the problem is.
I have fibromyalgia and can relate to pain. I have been struggling with constant pain since September.
I practice yoga daily and it has been such a relief for me. I have never set foot into a classroom. I do yoga in my home by watching videos that are on demand through my cable provider. I do know that there are also yoga videos online that you could try. After practicing yoga, I have learned what poses can help me stretch out pains that I am experiencing in different areas of my body. I now can do yoga on my own without having to watch a video because I know what poses I need to help my pains. It seriously has helped me tremendously!
Best wishes for an enjoyable yoga experience and for good health!
