Bikram yoga? I'm curious and want to try it, but it sounds a little intimidating. Does anyone have any experience with it to share? I am also wondering if the heat makes it possible to become flexible faster than in other types of yoga, or is it the same?

I haven't tried it, but my cousin goes weekly and loves it.
I think the heat would help with flexibility, just because muscles are easier to stretch when warm, but I don't know if it would necessarily make you flexible faster.
1I do Bikram 4-5 times a week and I totally love it. I initially started to burn off my flabby butt, which it did, and in a hurry. But even better, I'm totally a calmer, nicer person too. I sleep better, have better skin, and better posture. Don't worry about it being intimidating, no one starts out perfect, and there will be all levels of people in your class. Some will be great, and some will be super spastic. Just go with it and do your best and you'll get better with time. Also, skip super clingy pants or shorts but wear a tight top or sports bra only, go hungry and drink lots of water before and after.
2I think ailang summed it up. But one thing to remember that if it does get too difficult in the middle of class don't be afraid to stop for a while and take a break. It takes a while to get used to the heat.
3i recently started taking classes and it seems amazing! can anyone tell me if it really works to tone your body up?
4Personally I like Hot Yoga--not as hot as Bikram-Hot yoga is 105 degrees as opposed to Bikram which I believe is 115. Ok to be honest it is still pretty freakin hot. I started a few months ago and the first class I almost passed out. You absolutely have to drink tons of water during the days that you go and drink during and after the class. I don't know if I would recommend going hungry but I wouldn't necessarily go on a full stomach (the nausea effect could kick in). Anyway I think that it's helped tremendously with my flexibility and I feel and look more toned. A good way to stay hydrated and to be energized before the class is to drink some Emergen-C. The stuff has got 1000mg of vitamin C, and B vitamins for an energy boost that shouldn't give you the crash and burn effect of coffee or an energy drink. It comes in those little packets so I just keep a few packets in my purse and throw it in my water bottle right before class.
5LOVE IT!!! I have been practicing bikram for 3 years and have done 4, 30 day challenges(30 class in 30 days)it challenges you mentally and the physical benefits are incredible (bye bye cellulite) Give it a try you will be amazed Namaste!
6Thanks for all the replys! I'm gonna be brave and give it a try! I'm just nervous about the heat...
7I love....love....love Bikram Yoga. It's been a while though since I practiced it, due to living far from any Bikram class. You posted about 8 weeks ago but I wanted to add my two cents anyway. The idea behind the empty stomach is to give yourself a good two hours from your last meal to the start of the class for two good reasons: 1- to avoid feeling nauseous during some of the exercises and 2- to be able to get the most out of the class without having to divide your energy between yoga and digestion.
I hope you try it and love it. It does pay off!!
8I've been looking for a great place to do Bikram Yoga. But everywhere I see it it's super super expensive. I'm in Los Angeles (by UCLA)... does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go?

It is expensive, here is $25 per class. I would suggest you go to a Bikram class so you know what to expect on the next one. Then look for Hot Yoga or Sweaty Yoga it should be the same thing or pretty similar, 26 asanas, heated room, 90 min, etc. Those are regular yoga class fee, depending on the studio from $12 to $16.
Good luck
10One last commet, take your own mat, towel and water. They usually rent/sell them but you are going to save bringing your own. Yoga mats are about $5 to $15 at Walmart.
11Ok so this was posted a while ago but just wanted to put in my two cents. I am totally in love with Bikram Yoga! I started practicing two months ago and yes the first couple of classes were challenging because of the heat. The most important thing is to drink tons of water before class and do your best to stay in the room so your body can get used to the heat, even if it means not participating in a lot of the postures at first. Give 100% your best effort, but do not overdo it, just go at your own pace.
If you are legitimately putting in your best effort you are getting the best benefits, regardless of fitness level. In my opinion the benefits go so far beyond just physical, but I have also seen an improvement in my emotional and mental well being, I feel much calmer and more relaxed, plus I have gotten a lot of compliments on my skin from sweating out so many toxins. It is definitely worth a try, but beware because it is very addicting!
Namaste!
